Artist Bio
Milica Nikčević, dramatic mezzo-soprano, has been recognized for the commanding richness of her voice and the depth she brings to her portrayals. Critics have praised her artistry as “full mezzo and charisma that … holds attention” (New York Classical Review), “exciting to witness” (Voce di Meche), and possessing a “dark and full alto voice” (Finger Lakes Times).
She has distinguished herself in the great dramatic mezzo repertoire, bringing intensity and presence to Verdi heroines including Amneris (Aida), Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera), Federica (Luisa Miller), and Mistress Quickly in Falstaff, where she most recently triumphed with Geneva Light Opera. Equally at home in French and modern repertoire, she has portrayed the title roles in Carmen and Menotti’s The Medium, a role she performed to critical acclaim in New York.
Her Puccini portrayals include La Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica) and Zita (Gianni Schicchi), while her versatility extends to Rossini with roles such as Isabella (L’Italiana in Algeri). She has also appeared with The Martha Cardona Opera as Mamma Lucia in Cavalleria Rusticana, among other roles, showcasing her dramatic instincts in verismo roles.
On the concert stage, Ms. Nikčević has performed as Alto Soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Handel’s Messiah, and J.S. Bach’s Mass in B minor and St. John’s Passion. She has also appeared in sacred concert programs across the United States, Europe, and as far as South Africa, where her artistry is deeply informed by her Christian faith.
An alumna of the Bel Canto at Caramoor Young Artist Program and the Martina Arroyo Institute, she has worked with leading mentors including Maestros Christian Capocaccia, Will Crutchfield, Greg Ortega, and Steven Crawford, as well as Martina Arroyo, Deb Voigt, and others. She has been a student of world-renowned vocal master and pedagogue, David L. Jones, for many years.
February 2014 held the premiere of her first film role in Matthew Barney’s production, “River of Fundament,” starring Paul Giamatti, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ellen Burstyn, John Buffalo Mailer, and Elaine Stritch.
Balancing vocal power with emotional depth, Milica Nikčević embodies the tradition of the dramatic mezzo-soprano while offering a distinctive voice for today’s operatic stage.
